Our purpose

Build Literacy Strategies

We are in a manufactured crisis of illiteracy. Now more than ever we must strengthen our muscles at textual, media, and news literacy and deploy creative strategies against misinformation, propaganda, and AI. Speculative Lit offers resources and programming to develop literacy skills in community.

Nourish Creative Writing

We believe that the role of the artist in a stratified society is to make clear the intangible and offer us alternative visions of the future. Speculative Lit offers resources and programming for writers, artists, and cultural workers to deepen their craft and politic.

Engage in Collective Study

We must understand our past in order to understand our present a chart a path to the future. Speculative Lit offers resources and programming to promote collective study, critical thinking, and problem solving.

Develop Liberatory Praxis

Theory + Practice = Praxis. A community hub + community of practice, Speculative Lit brings together study, art, and action. We develop our literacy strategies communally so that we can make sense of our current conditions and build a safe, vibrant future for us all.

Flagship programming

We offer a range of programming and resources to meet folks where they are now in their journey literacy, creative, and political journey.

  • Following the footsteps of our Black feminist foremothers who often gathered to build up each other’s ideas and craft, our Literary Salons bring us together for collective reading, discussion, and writing time. Each salon centers around a text or idea, will feature read-alouds, and will offer ample time for discussion and creation. RSVP for our first salon here.

  • Coming soon! Essay Club is for those of us who want to discuss a text with a group of curious community members, but struggle to finish an entire book before the meet up. Each session will center around a single essay or article, of which some or all of the text will be read aloud in person.

  • Coming soon! An opportunity to body double and meet your literacy goals in community. For those looking to redevelop their attention span, improve their reading comprehension and media literacy, and practice forming their own opinions and evidence-supported claims. Sessions will include quiet reading time, reflection prompts, annotation resources, and more.

  • Coming soon! Writing workshops are a craft + practice space for writers of all level. A facilitator leads the group through exercises to understand the craft decisions behind effective pieces of writing, followed by time to practice those strategies and optionally share out.
